Johnny R. Quintanilla
Law, Policy, and Policy
I believe that my experience in this area has been very limited. In my current position and as a Graduate Hall Director, I have had only a few opportunities to develop in this area. Knowing this means that I have to continue to seek experiences that will expose me to this area. Reflecting on my lack of experience, I have determined that I am not very passionate about topics relating to this competency. This lack of interest might stem from my lack of experience. Therefore, to develop my interest, I will make sure that to make this competency a top priority in my development plan.
The only experiences that I have had that have contributed to my basic development in Law, Policy, and Governance includes co-managing Centennial Hall and my crisis response experience that I have had while working at State University of New York (SUNY), Oneonta over the summer.
Narratives, Experience, & Artifact
As Graduate Hall Director, I have to make sure that when I interact with students, I am abiding by the legal restrictions. For example, in my position, I serve as a conduct hearer and have to frequently enforce Family Educational Rights and Privacy Acts (FERPA) laws when parents try to get involved in student issues. Additionally, I also have to abide by Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAAP) when dealing with student with disabilities. Both my training and experience provide me with a basic understanding of these laws and their implications on my work.

Crisis Response Staff Development Experience
As a summer ACUHO-I intern at SUNY Oneonta, I had the opportunity to take part of a crisis response focused staff development. During this event I represent the Office of Residential Life and Community by providing my opinion and support during a mock crisis scenario developed by the University Police. The event allowed me to listen and hear how various institutional departments worked collaboratively to ensure that legal issues and concerns were addressed. Additionally, it provided me with experience in understanding how policies are created in order to combat issues like the one we experienced in the simulation.
