Human and Organizational Resources

As a student affairs practitioner, I think it is important to have knowledge on to how manage the physical, fiscal, and human resources in order to be effective in our field.  As a Graduate Hall Director, I have had various opportunities to develop within this competency area through experiences that include the management of a residence hall, the supervision of my staff, and my involvement in the Office of Residence Life’s action teams.  The following are two activities that are examples of my exemplary competency in this area.

Narratives & Artifacts

As a member of the RA Recruitment and Selection Action Team, I had the opportunity to work with a small group of Hall Directors and Graduate Hall Directors in the development of the 2013-2014 RA recruitment and selection process.  While on this committee, I had various tasks that I work on with our team throughout both Fall 2012 and Spring 2013.  These tasks included attending weekly meetings, presenting on the RA position description and requirements, revising and creating new procedures, interviewing candidates, and doing file reviews with students who did not get selected. In addition to these tasks, I was assigned to be the head of marketing for our group.

As the head of marketing, I had the opportunity to develop the advertisements that would be used to attract students to the position.  Using my experience in art and design, I develop all of the marketing material conceptual art and created flyers, digital signage, and postcards. Furthermore, my role also included working with and managing the Facebook profile and Twitter account for RA Recruitment and Selection.

Through my experience working with the RA Recruitment and Selection Committee, I learn how to develop my art renderings utilizing various programs and different forms of technology.  The conceptual art was the product of my love for aesthetics and strategic planning in the recruitment of specific types of students.  As part of my strategic plan, I solicited staff pictures from all residence halls in order to focus our recruitment on increasing the number of males and students of color that applied for the position. Additionally, I also was effective in recruiting a diverse pool of RA’s to provide testimonials to further support our goal.  Lastly, I also discovered that I enjoyed being challenged in finding new ways to draw student attention.

Personally, I believe that I discovered that I love to create and influence processes utilizing my creative side. Furthermore, I think that my ability to see patterns and strategically plan allowed me to complement my creativity in order to obtain our set goals as a committee.  Additionally, I also utilized both nonverbal and verbal communication to build relationships with other campus constituents in order to increase our pools. I mentioned this because I am usually not confident in my ability to articulate myself, but my experience on this committee helped me feel more comfortable in this role.

Resident Advisor (RA) Recruitment and Selection Action Team

Resident Advisor (RA) Training Action Team

As part of the RA Training Action Team, I had the opportunity influence both Summer 2012 and Winter 2013 RA trainings for the Office of Residence Life. On this team, I helped develop the outcomes for both trainings, put together the schedule, and helped create the In Hall Guide for Hall Directors.  I also helped with the facilitation of Behind Closed Doors and presented on Intentional Programming and Diversity Resources.  In my hall, I helped my supervisor facilitate our in-hall training, staff development, and debriefing activities.  My major contribution to the RA Training Action Team was in in the development of the Falcon Fair and the Mock Rock celebratory performances.

As a new signature activity, the Falcon Fair serves a major role building connections between RAs and on-campus resources. This resource fair provided RAs with vital information about 32 offices that they could utilize for programming, support, and referrals.  As this chair of this event, my role was to establish, recruit on-campus resources, and facilitate the actual fair. Creating this event allowed us to network with various staff members and offices in an effort to establish relationships with the Office of Residence Life.  Additionally, I had the opportunity to organize the logistics for the event, which include human, physical, fiscal resources.  Lastly, I utilized various computer programs to develop the flyers for the event.

As a second signature program, I also was responsible for the creation of the first Mock Rock put on by the Office of Residence Life.  The Mock Rock was an event that would foster staff development by requiring all Residence Hall staffs to create a 5 min presentation of their team and hall theme.  I developed the expectations used by the staffs as guidelines for creation of their presentation. Additionally, I also hosted the event and was part of the event when it occurred on the last day of training.

Through my experience on this Action Team, I was able to confirm two of my personal values. First, I recognized that I value community through the Falcon Fair.  The idea of the fair stemmed from the committee’s need to create an event that would educate RAs about resources in an efficient and educational manner. Therefore, I suggested and recommended the implementation of the fair in effort to address this need. By doing so, I discovered that I enjoyed networking and creating new relationships with other community members.  Secondly, I also discovered that I value having fun in my work. The establishment of the Mock Rock helped me see that I enjoyed creating educational and intentional activities that are fun and energizing.  Similarly to the Falcon Fair, the Mock Rock was created to address the need to increase morale among the RAs and professional staff.

Ultimately, I discovered that I enjoyed problem solving and utilizing my creativity to develop ideas into actual events.  This discovery also helped me realize that I am proficient in this competency area.
