History, Philosophy, and Values

As a graduate student, I furthered my understanding in the profession’s history, philosophy, and values with the coursework I did in my CSP 6010: Foundations and Functions of College Student Personnel. In that course I was introduced to the field and its standards.  Additionally, I have gained historical context to the development of the profession and its contribution to Higher Education.   Additionally, my experience within the CSP 6040: Educational Outcomes of American Colleges and Universities allowed me to implement both my personal and the profession’s values into the development of my Implementation Plan.  The Implementation Plan serve as a cumulating project that allowed me to create an institution using I gained from reports on best practices, the professional standards, and my own personal experience.   As an aspiring professional, I believe that I am still learning about the profession and the various functional areas that are part of it; therefore, I think that my limited experience working in the field indicates a need for growth in this area.

Narratives & Artifacts

In this course I developed an understanding for the profession by exploring the history of the profession.  I also was able to review and gain knowledge about the professional competencies and standards expected by the field in order to be an effective professional.  Furthermore, I utilized my coursework to develop an understanding of the various functional areas as well as the relationship between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs.  Lastly, I learned the importance of holding a professional identity and the importance of furthering my education by reviewing professional literature.

CSP 6040: Implementation Plan (I-Plan)

The creation of Atocha University served as a cumulating project that allowed me to create an institution from scratch using best practices, the professional standards, and the professional values to inform the services that my institution would offer.  Using the information I gathered and my personal preference, I created my institution’s mission, curriculum, and functional areas. This project signified my understanding of the professional values through the development of outcomes and the implementation of methods in obtaining them.
