Ethical Professional Practice

During my graduate career, I have demonstrated my ability to critically think about ethical professional practices through my experiences as a student and a Graduate Hall Director.   Throughout my course assignments, I was able to reflect on my experience working for the Office of Residence Life and the Bowling Green State University community.  I utilized the ethical statements provided by the profession to critique the services provided by BGSU.  Doing so allowed me to hold my internship accountable to those standards.  Additionally, I also realized that I incorporate these ethical statements into the day-to-day interactions with students through the supervision of my Resident Advisors, advising of student organizations, and my experience as a conduct hearer for the university.  Thus, my experiences allow me to justify my knowledge in this area as being “Proficient” but also indicate that I need to further develop within this area.  Having an “Proficient” understanding of the ethical statements of our profession serves as a foundation that will help me articulate, practice, and hold others accountable to upholding them.  I will continue to seek to develop in this area by connecting to more experienced practitioners and making sure that I personally abide by the ethical statements by role modeling appropriate behavior.

Narratives, Activities, & Artifacts

In CSP 6035: Multicultural Competence in Student Affairs I had the opportunity to critique and analyze myself and my internship site through a multicultural lens. The class allowed me to explore my own personal awareness, knowledge, and skills set as it related to becoming a multicultural competent practitioner.  As part of the curriculum, I had to critically reflect in these three areas in order to diagnose myself and the Office of Residence Life.  My first critical reflection focused on developing an awareness of my own identities and their intersectionality.  The second critical helped me further my understanding of my identities and well as focused on my knowledge that I currently held about those identities.  My final critical reflection summarized my experience in this course as well as articulated my response to the Office of Residence Life (ORL) as a multicultural organization.  In this reflection I critiqued the ORL and acknowledged areas of improvement that did not abide by the professional standards.  Additionally, I also focused on strengths and weaknesses and discussed areas that I needed to further develop.

The critical reflection served as a medium to discuss how my personal code was  in conflict with that of the ORL.  As a professional of color, it allowed me to express my concerns and also acknowledged that I was unsatisfied with the environment within the office.  I felt that I needed to express my concerns because I was never provided with the medium to discuss these issues. Thus, I took the opportunity when given this assignment to discuss these issues.  My reflection was not meant to harm the office but it was meant to discuss how the office was reflecting the profession’s values.  Moreover, the reflection also allowed me to provide suggestions and recommendations.  Although the paper was only for class purposes, it taught me that I could be analytical and and critical in suggesting ways to improve the experience of professional of colors within our office. It also taught me that I believed in the professions standards and that I had the obligation to voice concerns when there is  incongruence between the ORL’s way of doing things and what we ought to do as student affairs professionals.

Experience as a Conduct Hearer & Conduct Meeting Outline

As a Graduate Hall Director I serve as a conduct hearer for incidents that occur in my residence hall.   My role as a conduct hearer provides me with the opportunity to exercise due process in order to determine the outcome of residential level cases.  Personally, I provide students with reflective dialogue that challenged their way of thinking by asking them to reflect on the correlation between their actions and personal values. I do this because students are more likely to change their behavior because they realize that there is an incongruence between their actions and the reasons why they are at the institution.  Aside from this, the reflective conversation I have with students allows me to understand how I can provide advice to students. Through these conversations I often find that students are in distress due to other issues.

As a conduct hearer, I provide students with there sources and advice that they need tobe successful.  I do this in order to support my students and to make sure that I am always keeping their needs and wants in mind. It is important to keep in mind that no matter what the role of the student is, victim or alleged violator, that I advocate for their needs at all times. My belief is that every student I meet is a different person I can help, therefore I as a student affairs professional need to make sure that I am not and the institution is not harm students when allthey need is help.

When I hold conduct hearings my goal is to help the student realize that I know who they are, because having the stuent realize this will see that I am hodling them accountable to what we discuss in our convesatiosn.  It also allows me to let them know that I am here to support them and that I have investment in success at the institution.

Furthermore, I make sure to provide appropriate sanctioning that serves as an educational medium. Through this experience I have been able to provide students with the opportunity to further analyze their behavior through a restorative perspective rather than a punitive one.
