Assessment, Evaluation, and Research

As a Graduate Hall Director, I was not provided with the opportunity to develop in this area; therefore I involved myself in opportunities that would allow me to become more competent in AER.  I originally struggled to figure out how I would develop in this area especially since AER was not part of my position description.  Knowing that it was important to develop in this area, I decided to obtain a practicum researching Immersion trips with the Service-Learning Office.  Thus, through my experience working with the Service-Learning office and my coursework I have been able to develop an “Acceptable” foundation for this competency.  Ultimately, I learned how create assessments and conduct best practice focused research.

Narratives, Experience, & Artifacts

As part of the CSP 6035: Multicultural Competence in Student Affairs course, Tim Ocskasy and I developed a presentation for the Resident Student Association executive board.  We utilized the Qualtrics system to develop a pre-assessment in order to determine the needs of student group. Using a qualitative analysis, Tim and I developed a multicultural presentation that focused on developing self-awareness and knowledge of being politically correct.  We also used a post-assessment to determine the amount of learning that took place from our presentation.  Lastly, Tim and I collected all our data and reported our findings in the form of a research paper.  The paper outlines our work and the outcomes of our experience.

Service-Learning Immersion Trip Research

As a practicum student for the Service-Learning Office, I spent numerous hours researching best practices for immersion trips. My research specifically focused on the four corner institutions which include Bowling Green State University, Kent State, Ohio University, and Miami University.  I collected data utilizing the institutions’ websites and reported my findings in an executive summary to the Director.  My findings reported common practices, trips available, and student accountability.
